    What is a chargeback?

Chargeback is a word to describe when a customer disputes a charge on their debit or credit card. A Chargeback can occur for several reasons for example when a card has been charged twice due to processing errors, the product or service purchased is not delivered, the customer doesn’t recognize the purchase made on their card. One of the most common reasons for a chargeback is because of fraud where the purchase was made without consent from the original cardholder due to stolen card details.

What can I do to reduce fraud?

First and foremost you can enable 3D Secure, it will not protect you from all types of chargeback but from chargebacks caused by fraud. Also, be aware of orders that use different "bill to" and "ship to" addresses, or unusually large and next-day delivery orders which can be a sign of fraudulent credit card use. But most importantly you know your everyday business and the patterns of your frequently returning customers. Pay attention to deviations!

    What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure is comparable to a purchase made with to Chip & PIN on a terminal but for online purchases. 3D Secure is designed to protect both the consumer and merchant by trying to validate that the cardholder is the one who is actually trying to make the purchase. This extra validation one of the most widely used services to reduce online fraud. The cardholder has different 3D secure experiences dependent on which card issuer they have. Some issuer may for example require mobile BankID while others ask a secret password during the transaction process.

If an e-commerce merchant enables 3D secure on their website, the liability shift away from the merchant to the issuing bank if a fraudulent purchase is made on their website. Hence, 3D secure works as a “fraud insurance” for e-commerce merchant.

How can I get 3D Secure?

All acquiring merchants at Bambora are automatically ready for 3D secure and the service should already be activated by your Payment Service Provider (PSP). If you are unsure contact your Payment Service provider and check. It is the Payment Service Provider who handles 3D secure and other fraud fighting tools. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact Bambora!

Are there additional fraud fighting tools?

Yes, and they are often referred to as dynamic 3D secure or risk based authentication. The fraud fighting tools use different parameters for example behavioral patterns, purchase amounts, where the purchase was made etc. to determine whether the payment is a high or low risk transaction. If it is a high risk transactions the cardholders are prompted to provide authentication for the payment trough regular 3D Secure. Bambora encourage the use of additional fraud fighting tools and are soon launching a new fraud fighting tool available to our Payment Service Provider merchants.

What should I do if I suspect or discover fraud?

Make sure to close the customers’ accounts, do not deliver the product or service and credit the actual amount back to the affected card. If a fraudulent payment already occurred and your payment solution don’t use 3D secure, Bambora will notice you when the chargeback is received from the issuer. If you suspect fraud even though 3D secure was enabled you can always contact the Bambora Risk team to get more information. Also, take some time to clear what in the purchase process can be improved and which actions to take in order to prevent future frauds.

In addition, the Bambora risk team are monitoring all Bambora transactions and will contact you if they find any transactions that look suspicious and ask you about additional information.
