5 tips: How to protect against fraud

Card fraud is a growing problem that both consumers, banks and merchants pay a high prize for. To help you prevent fraud we have compiled five good tips on how you can reduce the risk of being affected.

Stolen card information is sold daily online and criminals are always developing new methods to outsmart and bypass the security measures that are set up. Because if this, we work hard to stay one step ahead in all matters of security. By monitoring our customer's transactions we can both detect and prevent fraud and also advice merchants on measures that reduce the risk of being targeted.

Here are a few of our best tips for merchants that can help reduce the risk of fraud.

1: Be cautious of unusual buying behavior

Regardless if you sell online or in a store you should be extra observant of customers who display unusual buying behavior. If someone, for example, wants to spend an unusually large amount or buy an unusual amount of a certain product, it could be a reason to be suspicious. For online merchants there are also effective tools that can monitor how your customers behave while on your site. These tools take a lot of different variables into account and can therefore alert you to purchases that seem "out of place".

2. Use 3D Secure for your online store

3D Secure is a security feature for card payments that can prevent a large amount of the most common types of online fraud. 3D Secure means that shoppers, besides their card information, have to enter a password or other type of verification when paying. The benefit of 3D Secure is that it effectively stops most CNP fraud, where criminals only use stolen card information. If you have activated 3D Secure for you online store, the card issuing bank also has all the liability in the case of any fraud. For these reasons we recommend that all our merchants should use 3D Secure.

3. Keep en eye on your card terminal

Your card terminal is a valuable asset and should be treated as such. If customers take an unusually long time or are trying to distract you when using the terminal it could be an indication that they are trying to manipulate it. Lately, we have also seen a trend were stolen card terminals have been used for fraud. Because of this, never leaving your card terminal unsupervised and storing it securely are important steps to preventing fraud.

4. Some products come with greater risks

When criminals use stolen card information to buy goods, the goal is usually to convert them to cash by selling them on. For that reason, it can be helpful to be extra cautious when selling products that are "easy" to convert to cash. Two such examples are jewelry and watches.

5. Don't make refunds to other cards

Another way that criminals might try to convert goods into cash is by buying them on a stolen card and then make a return. That is why you should never make refunds to another card than the one that was used for the original purchase.
